19 Trophies at the IWC 2017

We are delighted to announce that eleven wines from our portfolio were chosen for 19 Regional, National, and International Varietal Trophies between them at this years’ International Wine Challenge.

The trophy-winning wines (listed below, accompanied with judges tasting notes) are a testimony to the incredible constancy in the bestconsistency and quality attained by their producers. Liberty Wines’ producers came away with an excellent total of 19 trophies, 6 more than in 2016. A further 14 gold, 65 silvers and 49 bronze awards were won by Liberty Wines’ producers in our portfiolio.

 

Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Millénaires is again on the Champion of Champions short list, having previously won winning the award in 2015. Liberty Wines’TheCharles Heidsieck range has received a total 14 trophies at the IWC Awards in the last 6 years.  

Château de Santenaycame in strong this year winningwon a total of 8 trophies despite being considered an “off the radar” village. Most notable of which is the International Pinot Noir Trophy, won by Mercurey 1er Cru `Les Puillets` 2015, and the Aloxe Corton Trophy won by "Les Brunettes et Planchots".

Charles Melton also performed well, winning three trophies including both the South Australian, andthe Australian Red TrophiesTrophy. Judges were impressed with its “full bodied palate” and “benchmark rich cherry fruit.”

This year, Tasmanian producer Tolupuddle Vineyard won its second consecutive trophy for Tasmanian Chardonnay, adding to its the growing collection of IWC trophies in just a short periodwon since their first vintage in 2012.

Sparkling:

Vintage Rosé Champagne Trophy / Rosé Champagne Trophy

Heady sensual nose, perfumed rose, dark spices, ripe red fruits - a sense of decadence. Rich savoury complex palate with subtle nuances of perfume and spice, creamy mousse and terrific developing finish.

 

Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires 1995

Champions Trophy – Shortlisted

A lovely medley of brioche, orange peel and spices, with notes of cashew, honey and lees on the palate. Great persistence on the finish.

 

White:

Shaw + Smith 'Lenswood' Chardonnay 2015

Adelaide Hills Chardonnay Trophy

A fragrant, delicate nose offering the salty tang of rockpools and oyster shells over green stone fruit. A fresh and lively mouthful of citrus-spiked stone fruit with an elegant, long, complex finish.

 

Red:

Justino's Madeira Malvasia Colheita 1997

Malvasia Trophy/Verdelho Trophy/Maderia Trophy

Engagingly complex mix of aromas - toffee, orange zest and grapiness. The palate is rich, rancio and sweet with balancing burnt sugar and acidity.

 

Château de Santenay, Aloxe-Corton "Les Brunettes et Planchots" 2015

Aloxe Corton Trophy

Brilliant wine from an 'off the radar' village. Sour morello cherries and caramelised raspberry with a savoury edge finish. Palate delivers on noses promise - Racy, brilliant finish with stony minerality.

 

Château de Santenay, Mercurey 1er Cru `Les Puillets` 2015

Mercurey Trophy / Red Burgundy Trophy / French Red Trophy / International Pinot Noir Trophy

Château de Santenay La Comme 2015

Santenay Red Trophy / Santenay White Trophy/ Santaney Red Trophy

Beautifully expressive with floral cherry fruit leading to a supple, elegant palate with silky texture and some raspberry freshness.

 

 Château de Santenay Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 

Clos De de Vougeot Trophy

A seductive and hedonistic face of Burgundy, with beguiling aromatics of violets and griotte cherries. Sweeping and plush, with excellent intensity and voluminous tannins.

 

Charles Melton `Nine Popes` Barossa Valley 2014

Barossa Red Blend Trophy / South Australian Red Trophy / Australian Red Trophy

Classy and complex aromatics of sweet cedar and white pepper. A full-bodied but lively palate with benchmark rich cherry fruit, here beautifully balanced by juicy acidity and leading to a long finish of ripe fruit and wild herbs.

 

Jean-Claude Boisset Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2015 

Clos De de La la Roche Trophy

Minerals and damsons on the open and generous nose - very concentrated and decadent. A textured, velvety palate, heavy with fruit yet light, ripe and caressing tannins. A starry, complete wine.

 

Quinta dos Carvalhais Touriga Nacional 2014

Dao Red Trophy

This wine has lovely Touriga aromas of floral black cherries with subtle meaty overtones. The palate is well balanced and sappy with fresh black fruits. Very stylish.
