Another Winning Year for Willunga 100

So far, 2016 has seen Willunga 100 featured in Matthew Jukes’ 100 Best Australian Wines for the eighth consecutive year, awarded five star status in the 2017 James Halliday Wine Companion, and most recently awarded multiple gold medals and trophies at the Royal Adelaide and McLaren Vale Wine Shows.

We are very excited about the expansion of the ‘The Hundred’ range in early 2017, which will see the current wine from Blewitt Springs complemented by an additional wine from the Clarendon district. These two unoaked, single-vineyard wines showcase the diversity of the McLaren Vale districts and at the same time demonstrate the effect this diversity has on the enthralling Grenache variety. At the McLaren Vale Wine Show, both 2015 ‘Hundred’ wines were awarded Gold medals and were ranked first and second in their competitive class. The 2015 Blewitt Springs ‘Hundred’, one of the highest scoring wines of the entire show (one of only five wines to receive 97 points or higher), was also awarded two trophies – Best Grenache and Best One Year Old Grenache. The fruit for this single vineyard wine was sourced from the same site that the 2014 ‘Hundred’ came from. With the 2014 ‘Hundred’ having picked up the Best Grenache trophy at the McLaren Vale Wine Show in 2015, this means the same site and same winemaker have won this trophy two years in succession. Hot on the heels of these wins, at Australia's National Wine Show, the 2015 Blewitt Springs Grenache won the trophy for Best Dry Red Wine (Other Varietal).

This year’s awards follow unprecedented success at the 2015 regional wine shows in Australia where all the current 2014 vintages won gold medals or trophies. A full round up of all these awards plus James Halliday’s recent scores can be found below.

James Halliday Wine Companion 2017 Edition

2013 'THE TITHING' GRENACHE
96 points
The colour is exceptionally bright and lively for Grenache, and sets the scene for the gloriously juicy red berry fruits that race headlong along the palate and into the finish and aftertaste, its vibrant acidity the key to its rare quality.

2014 MCLAREN VALE SHIRAZ/VIOGNIER
95 points
The bouquet has spice and liquorice to the fore, its plum and blackberry fruit on the palate with fine, dusty tannins running through its length. The clever winemaking has allowed the fruit to retain its freshness, the French oak to sit alongside.

2014 'THE HUNDRED' GRENACHE
94 points
It is far harder to make an unoaked red wine than it might seem, particularly to achieve a sense of completeness. This fills the mouth with a spherical texture and structure, the journey from start to finish and back again without a break. And yes, the red fruits do have seamless tannins.

2014 MCLAREN VALE GRENACHE
94 points
A potent and powerful wine, with rare drive and grip, that only McLaren Vale can produce. It does so without in any way subjugating the varietal character, the savoury tannin structure something to behold. Radically different from The Hundred.
