Five Platinum Best in Show medals at DWWA 2018

We are pleased to announce that five wines from our portfolio have scooped prestigious Best in Show medals at this year's Decanter World Wine Awards.

In a new judging system for 2018, all Gold medal-winning wines are grouped by grape variety or style and re-tasted by a panel of Regional Chairs and Co-Chairs, with the winners promoted to Platinum medal. In a separate tasting of the Platinum winners, the 4 Co-Chairs will then select the Best in Show winners - the ultimate accolade at the Awards.

The judges' scores and tasting notes for our top medal-winning wines are as follows:

Poggio al Tesoro, Il Seggio Bolgheri 2014, Tuscany, Italy
98/100 points
Deep black-red in colour, with earth, complex aromas in which notes of copse and warm stone mingle with fine leather and sun-warmed plums: classy and refined. It's deep, dark, vivid and long on the palate, with supple yet ample tannins; the bright fruits shade into laurel and thyme, and that warm-stone finesse is there on the finish. Beautifully crafted Bolgheri.

Justino's, Madeira Terrantez 50 Years Old NV, Portugal
98/100 points
Pale, limpidly clear walnut in colour, with sweet, nutty, nourishing aromas in which camphor meets barleysugar, mint meets beeswax - and much else. It has great depth, purity and drive on the palate, yet the ample sweetness rounds and softens any potential asperities. You may find everything from apples and lemons and oranges to caramels, green coffee and burnt raisins in this complex but never heavy Terrantez.

Wieninger, Wiener Gemischter Satz Nussberg 2016, Vienna, Austria
97/100 points
Pale gold, with complex yet sensually enticing aromas of spring leaf and flowers with bright, early season summer fruits. There's a fresh, doughy undertow, too, to this complex yet good-natured, highly accessible blend of Gruner Veltliner with Weissburgunder and Neuburger. On the palate, the complexity of the field blend provides the perfect foil to the wine's mouth-watering, plumply juicy yet finally dry flavours. Proof that Gemischter Satz can satisfy intellectually as well as charm.

Donnafugata, Ben Ryé, Passito di Pantelleria 2015, Sicily, Italy
97/100 points
Dark honey-gold in colour, with burnished bitter-sweet orange scents almost smoky in their intensity. The wine is thick, intense and weighty on the tongue, oily in texture, with a saturation of scent which would seem unbalanced were it not for the 193 grammes of residual sugar to resolve and refine it. A saline note adds a further factor of balance to this exotic southerner.

Sandeman, 40 Year Old Tawny Port NV, Portugal
97/100 points
Deep, translucent rose-amber in colour. Lifted, elegant and very refined in aroma, not so much intensified as sublimated by time. All of that fragrant softness and refinement drifts effortlessly into its silky, seamless, supremely sippable palate. A grand fortified wine which almost seems to defy analysis, so harmonious and so complete is it.

Capezzana, Riserva, Carmignano Vin Santo, Tuscany, Italy, 2010
97/100 points Dried fruit, walnut and spicy white fruit on the nose. Super luscious on the palate with intense toasted hazelnut and caramleised fruit flavours. Lingering acidity pushes through on the nutty finish.

Charles Heidsieck, Blanc des Millénaires Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne, Champagne, France, 2004
97/100 points Expansive and intense with a toasted nuttiness dominating. Tight acid structure and admirable focus on the palate. Impressive length with a pleasant bitter peel twist to the finish.

Dandelion Vineyards, Red Queen of the Eden Valley Shiraz, Eden Valley, South Australia, Australia, 2015
97/100 points The deliciously complex nose has layers of ripe red berries, black pepper, cloves and dark chocolate, the palate is packed with fruit, boysenberry, damson and plum with hints of liquorice and violet, lovely cool long finish.

Montes, Outer Limits Old Roots Cinsault, Itata Valley, Chile, 2017
97/100 points Perfumed florality, raspberry compote and spicy cardamom aromatics. Concentration and freshness on the palate with a firm tannic structure and earthiness.

Morris, Old Premium Rare Liqueur Muscat, Rutherglen, Victoria, Australia, NV
97/100 points Haunting, complex, aged aromas with nutty, dried orange and figs. Massively concentrated palate with great complexity of mouthfilling golden syrup, maplewood, espresso, mocha, brine and spice. Very long beautiful nutty finish.

Morris, Old Premium Rare Liqueur Topaque, Rutherglen, Victoria, Australia, NV
97/100 points Amazing savoury characters to the nose with burnt toffee, treacle, brazil nut and pecan, the palate has hugely complex with coffee, candied orange, clove, vanilla, lovely acidity underlining the sweetness, lovely long creamy finish.

Sandeman, 30 Year Old Tawny, Port, Portugal, NV
97/100 points Beautifully inviting and complex candied orange and spice with a fiery, whisky cask character. Creamy, nutty richness carries all the way through to the finish with a sweet, yet fresh elegance and a soft savoury undertone.

Gašper, Pinot Grigio, Goriška Brda, Primorska, Slovenia, 2017

96/100 points Fresh and floral with an orchard fruit nose. The palate reveals a pretty wine with plenty of citrus notes and a lovely freshness. Very good for price level, very well made and very flavourful. The finish does not disappoint.

Jean-Claude Boisset, Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy, France, 2016
96/100 points Elegant, toasty, floral and violet nose. Gentle red berries, fine chalky minerality and oaky tones on the palate bring gentle vanillin and warming cinnamon characters with a creamy sweetness. The fruit is dense but the structure is gentle and the tannins are fine. Very pretty.

Joel Delaunay, La Voûte, Touraine Chenonceaux, Loire, France, 2016
96/100 points Attractive floral and lightly grilled orchard fruit aromas. Ripe, fresh and polished with pithy apple, pear and mouth-filling texture. Supple and substantial with potential to age.

Valdespino, Don Gonzalo V.O.S, Oloroso, Sherry, Spain, NV
96/100 points
Mellow mocha, spice and polished wood nose, the palate has beautiful complexity, rounded and sweet with lovely chocolate, nut and spice on the lingering finish.

Offley, 20 Year Old Tawny, Port, Portugal, NV
96/100 points
Fresh cranberry and rosehip mingle with sweet fruit cake, nuts and spice; full-bodied and rich with a citric bite. Seamless quality, absolutely delicious.

Offley, 30 Year Old Tawny, Port, Portugal, NV
95/100 points
Smoky, roasted nuts, dried sultana and prune aromas give way to a tangy, grapefruit pith crispness and a contrasting vibrant sweetness. Smooth, silky and poised.

Herdade do Peso, Trinca Bolotas Alicante Bouschet-Touriga Nacional-Aragonez, Alentejo, Portugal, 2016
95/100 points
Lovely and youthful with bags of potential. Elegant earl grey tea, violets and mint with blueberry notes and a mouthwateringly fresh, lingering finish.

Laurent-Perrier, Grand Siècle Brut, Champagne, Champagne, France, NV
95/100 points Enticing grilled citrus, nut and red apple nose. Lovely complexity of flavour on the palate with orchard fruit flavours and a bit of toasty/creamy autolysis; the texture is silky with plenty of freshness and a dense, long finish. You'll definitely want a second glass.
