We have added Biondi Santi, the legendary producer from Montalcino, to our Italian portfolio.
The Biondi Santi family, who founded their renowned estate in the 19th Century, signed a key partnership with the Descours family (owners of Charles Heidsieck, Piper-Heidsieck, Château La Verrerie, Bonpoint and J.M.Weston) in December 2016. Sixth generation Jacopo Biondi Santi and his son Tancredi remain actively involved in the running of the vineyards and winemaking, which are also benefitting from the investment being undertaken by Christopher Descours.
The 150 hectare property has 26 hectares of vineyard split over three sites. Il Greppo, at 500 metres above sea level, is where the winery and house is situated and where the oldest plot, planted in 1936, is to be found. They also have vines to the east of Montalcino and to the north, close to Montosoli. The oldest vineyards, those over 25 years, are the source of grapes for the Brunello Riserva, while those between 10 and 25 years are used for the Brunello ‘Annata’, and those younger than 10 years for the Rosso.
David Gleave MW, managing director, comments “Biondi Santi is an exciting addition to our Tuscan portfolio, complementing our existing Brunello producers Conti Costanti, San Polo and Fossacolle, and strengthening our offering from Montalcino. Their wines are already among the very best in Montalcino and we’re convinced that - given what we’ve seen at Charles Heidsieck - the backing of Christopher Descours will ensure the property modernises in an intelligent manner and the wines will get even better over the next few years.”
