Welcome to El Coto de Rioja

We are delighted to announce an exciting new addition to our Spanish portfolio...

Founded in 1970, El Coto de Rioja is a relatively young bodega yet one of the region’s largest vineyard owners. Currently, El Coto has over 700 hectares in production across the three Rioja DOCa sub-zones of Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa.

The stand-out reds hail primarily from their original estate at Cenicero in the heart of Rioja Alta. The ‘Coto de Imaz’ Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva represent the best selection from 100 hectares of Tempranillo, while the ‘Coto Real’ – a blend of Tempranillo sourced from the 50-year-old ‘Los Cuartos Viejos’ vineyard with a little Mazuelo and Garnacha - won the Rioja Trophy at this year’s IWSC in London.

In Rioja Baja, the ‘Los Almendros’ estate in Ausejo has trebled in size over the past 10 years through El Coto’s dedicated purchase of adjacent small plots and today, with some 300 hectares in total, it is the largest estate in the Rioja DOCa. Lying at around 450 metres’ altitude, El Coto has re-introduced traditional hillside terraces for 10 hectares of Garnacha vines, as well as revived age-old varieties such as Maturana.

Conversely, their investment in the new ‘Carbonera’ estate at Bergasa is testament to El Coto’s willingness to explore different terrains and experiment with the aromatic white varieties recently authorised by the Rioja Wine Board (such as Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay), to which the site’s 200 hectares of vineyard, at 700 metres above sea level, are ideally suited.

Head winemaker Cesar Fernandez oversees production, ensuring the grapes arrive at the winery (based in Oyón, Rioja Alavesa) in pristine condition. Modern and intelligently designed, the emphasis in the winery is on temperature control and gentle handling of the grapes, while the focus in the cellar is on new oak - housing around 65,000 barrels (one of the largest stocks in the Rioja DOCa) with a low average usage of just over three years.

David Gleave MW, Managing Director of Liberty Wines, says: “We are delighted to add El Coto de Rioja to our portfolio as the wines both complement and greatly strengthen our existing offering from Rioja. The breadth and depth of their vineyards is one of the most exciting things about El Coto, as it ensures consistency of supply and quality to our customers.”
