Castaño: Masters of Monastrell

Castaño: Masters of Monastrell

Familia Castaño symbolises the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude (750m above sea level), resulting in wines of great character and finesse. The Castaño family own over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO, of which 80% are planted with the native Monastrell variety. Indeed, the Castaño family have been making wines in Yecla DO for generations and have become pioneers in Monastrell.

Making single varietal Monastrell wines was considered by many to be rather adventurous in the conservative wine world of Yecla where Monastrell is sold in bulk.  However, the Castaño family’s care and attention to detail in nurturing Monastrell in the vineyard and winery has resulted in the production of excellent value, standout wines showcasing the potential Monastrell has as a single varietal wine. This has been recognised by the international wine world and critics with Bodegas Castaño wines scooping up several awards from Decanter, the International Wine Challenge with 2015 Hécula Monastrell, also winning the ‘Best Value Red Trophy’ in this year’s Wine Merchant Top 100.  The 2015 Hécula is a prime example of how wonderful Monastrell can be, exuding rich and elegant aromas of ripe red fruits, blueberries and liquorice. The palate is excellently structured with silky tannins and balanced acidity – a quality that comes from the higher altitude Castaño vineyards. Soft blackberry and bramble fruit dominate the palate with a subtle cinnamon spice giving a long, lifted finish.

As an ambitious family business, they have invested in a project to rebrand their wines last year and the new labels are now in stock and available. We think the new look is really in keeping with the family’s ethos, relaxed yet tenacious, traditional yet forward thinking.  As such, they continually strive to improve quality through the implementation of organic agricultural methods and modern wine production techniques. This has led to a new addition to the range, the 2016 Castaño Organic Macabeo. This is a bright and fresh white wine made from Macabeo, which grows on organically farmed, north-facing vines on sandy limestone soil. It boasts aromas white fruits, lemons and blossom which are balanced on the palate with beautifully, lifted acidity. It is moreish and a great choice this summer!
