appellation in Mendoza and one of the region's premier vine growing areas. The estate is known as a Malbec specialist with a reputation as one of the country's top five producers of this particular variety. Alberto Antonini and fellow Tuscan, Antonio Morescalchi, were so impressed with the vineyards in the area around Mendoza, following their first trip to Argentina in 1995, that they persuaded a few friends to join with them in buying this estate. The estate covers 216 hectares, of which 40 were planted between 1996 and 1999.

100% of these grapes originate from a vineyard located to the west of Vista Flores, with high density planting and low yield production. Special cultural work is being carried out in this vineyard to achieve greater quality and concentration of the grapes. Yields are 5.5 tonnes per hectare.

Vintage Information

Climatic phenomena, including the Zonda wind, which occurred during flowering, produced smaller clusters and fewer grapes, increasing the leaf/cluster ratio and resulting in a high natural concentration within the fruit. In January the high temperatures increased the sugar content so care was taken regarding the maturation of phenols to ensure the grapes were harvested on time. This resulted in the best harvest of the decade.

Pre-fermentation maceration took place at 5°C for seven days in stainless steel. Fermentation began with indigenous yeasts at 24°C for 15 days. The cap was rotated by manual pigeage throughout the fermentation. Post-fermentation maceration began and lasted for four days. Malolactic fermentation and ageing took place for 12 months in new French oak barrels. The following year, due to the powerful structure of the fruit, the wine was placed in a second set of new oak barrels for 24 months, completing 36 months of ageing.

Tasting Notes

Opaque purple in colour with complex notes of blackberry and wild strawberries. The palate is opulent with good depth of fruit supported by firm, underlying tannins and the finish is long, with lasting berry flavours.
