Thomas Bachelder will be known to many of our customers as the first...
winemaker at Le Clos Jordanne. He has now gone out on his own, together with his wife, Mary Delaney. In their first vintage in 2009, they made three Chardonnays from three different regions - Burgundy, Niagara and Oregon. Using the same winemaking techniques in each region (wild yeasts, minimal intervention and the same barrel makers), the difference in the wines is solely down to the vineyard which makes for some very interesting blind tasting results.
Wismer Parke is a single vineyard in the Tweny Mile Bench sub-region of Canada's Niagara Peninsula. The cool climate and limestone soils of the area are extremely well suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, producing rich and fruit-driven wines. The Pinot Noir vines were planted at Wismer Parke in 1999. They are planted on well-drained silt, clay and limestone soils. According to winemaker, Thomas Bachelder, this plot would qualify as one of Niagara's 'Grand Crus' for Pinot Noir.
It was unusually cold and dry in January followed by a brutally cold February that brought more snow than normal and shattered low temperature records across the province. Although April and May were relatively normal, the bizarre weather swings resumed with an exceptionally wet June followed by a very dry July. The summer growing season brought excellent conditions with few major storms and sunny warm weather in all appellations. September weather settled nicely into warm beautiful conditions for the start of harvest.
Thomas Bachelder has a hands-off approach to winemaking. The grapes were hand harvested and gently pressed, in order to retain delicate aromatics. Fermentation with only indigenous yeasts, took place in French oak barrels, of which 25% were new and the remaining between one and five years old. The wine was aged for 18 months in barrel and then rested for an additional eight months in bottle to allow the nuanced floral bouquet to develop.
The Wismer Parke Pinot Noir has aromas of plush, ripe red berry fruit on the nose. On the palate, the wine is extremely poised, with silky tannins, bright fruit and racy acidity. A rich and complex wine.
