Vineyards

The 30 hectares of Coudoulet are located just east of the vineyard of Beaucastel and is often considered as ‘baby Beaucastel’. The soils are very similar to that of Beaucastel, with the vineyards planted on sand, clay and limestone sub-soils with Galets Roulés top soil, which are traditional to the Southern Rhone. The Galets Roulés play a vital role in helping the grapes ripen by retaining the daytime heat and releasing it at night, and ensures the vines have a good start in Spring.

Vintage Information

2015 was characterised by a mild, wet winter which was followed by a long and hot summer, which brought harvest forward and boosted potential alcohol levels in the grapes. The vines coped well with the extreme heat and lack of rain in the summer thanks to good hydric reserves. Grapes were in excellent health throughout harvest, with well ripened stems and tannins, set to produce rich and powerful wines.

Vinification

Each variety was hand harvested and vinified separately. The grapes were then pressed using a pneumatic press into cement tanks for alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, for 12 days at a controlled temperature of 20°C. The wine was aged for six months in oak foudres before bottling.

Tasting Notes

This wine is deep ruby red in colour, with intense aromas of stewed raspberries, herbs and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied with great depth and concentration. This elegant wine has a long, lingering finish.
