Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru

Côte de Nuits

Jean-Claude Boisset

Jean-Claude Boisset was radically transformed with the arrival in 2002 of viniculteur Grégory...

Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vineyards

Gevrey-Chambertin covers one of the biggest areas of the Cote de Nuits, with 330 hectares in production, 85 hectares of which cover the 9 Grand Crus. The Grand Cru hills face south east and begin to the south of Gevrey-Chambertin. The thin, pebbly soil of Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, with a high levels of active limestone, gives long-lived wines of depth and finesse.

Vintage Information

In 2006, the vines were stressed by high temperatures in July, mitigated by a cool, rainy August. The beginning of September was dry and sunny resulting in grapes with good alcohol potential but which required a great deal of careful sorting and selecting. Grégory rejected 8-30% of the fruit picked in his quest for the highest possible quality. Extremely warm, dry weather at harvesting meant very ripe grapes and forward fruit characters characterise this vintage.

Vinification

After hand-picking and destemming, the grapes were whole-berry fermented in tank with three weeks maceration and frequent treading by foot to extract good colour and ripe tannins. No yeasts, enzymes or tannins were added. The wine aged for 12 months in casks, with less than 20% new oak. Gravity is used to move the wine around the cellar to avoid damaging the delicate Pinot aromatics. It was not fined. Just over 100 cases were produced from a yield of 35 hl/ha.

Tasting Notes

Ruby red colour, with great intensity on the nose with blackberry and red fruit. On the palate, the wine is delicate but intense, with a very fine balance between supple tannins and ripe, spicy fruit.
