Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vineyards

Savigny-Lès-Beaune is a 130 hectare appellation located 3 km north of Beaune. The soils here are predominantly pebbly limestone. The wine was produced from old vines, meaning that the small bunches of grapes were thick-skinned and that the yields were low, leading to excellent concentration of fruit. Grégory Patriat deliberately chose vines treated with little or no fertiliser, cultivated organically where possible.

Vintage Information

Never has the phrase 'all's well that ends well' rung so true as in the case of the 2014 Burgundy vintage. Devastating hailstorms in June were followed by a cold and rainy August, where temperatures struggled to reach 20C. These conditions meant that the threat of rot, under-ripe grapes and another low-yielding vintage hung over the growers. Just as all hope was fading, September was bathed in sunshine and rescued the 2014 vintage from the brink of disaster.

Vinification

Grapes were hand picked and sorted into perforated 20kg crates. The second manual sorting took place upon arrival to the winery. Grapes were 100% destalked but not crushed, and put into vats using gravity. Total maceration lasted for 24 days including one week of cold maceration at 12°C. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts. The wine was aged for 12 months on its lees without racking off, with 30% new barrels made from lightly-toasted French oak. The wine was lightly filtered but not fined before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet with a highly expressive nose of red berries, ripe cherries and spice. The palate is rich with velvety tannins and a lingering finish.
