Jean-Claude Boisset was radically transformed with the arrival in 2002 of viniculteur Grégory...
Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.
This appellation has 130 hectares of Premier Crus vines. Located at the mouth of a valley which offers some of the finest landscapes to be found in the Côte d'or, the vineyards are arranged in a V-shape, with the Premier Crus occupying two slopes which virtually face one another. The slopes produce very different wines. The Beaune slope produces refined, aromatic, feminine wines. With an easterly exposure, the soils here have a fairly high sand and gravel content. The result is dense wine with a robust character in its early years.
2009 was an exceptional vintage which produced exceptional fruit. This meant little sorting was required and only a low proportion of the fruit was discarded. Harvest began on the 27th September.
The grapes were harvested in small, perforated cases and then sorted. The stems were removed (no crushing took place) before a maceration which lasted around 30 days, with frequent treading by foot. No yeasts were added, so as not to detract from the natural fruit character. The wine was matured for 12 months in casks, with a low proportion of new oak (less than 20%). Lastly the wine was bottled by means of gravity, without fining or filtration. Under 100 cases were produced of the 2009.
Ruby colour with floral notes on the nose mingling with dark fruits and spices. Excellent acidity and concentration with the rich, intense mid-palate that is typical of this vintage. The finish is long and complex with mellow flavours of vanilla, forest fruits and spice.
