Pommard `Les Vaumuriens`

Côte de Beaune

Jean-Claude Boisset

Jean-Claude Boisset was radically transformed with the arrival in 2002 of viniculteur Grégory...

Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Les Vaumuriens is located in Pommard, between Beaune and Volnay, on the hillside slopes facing Volnay. The soil here is a mixture of clay and limestone, which gives the wine good intensity on the palate and elegance on the finish. In old French 'Vaumuriens' describes a narrow, steep-sided valley. The wine is produced from very old and naturally low-yielding vines, with careful and environmentally-friendly vineyard management.

Vintage Information

The 2015 vintage was outstanding. Winter was relatively mild with a short spring, the unseasonably high temperatures early in the year continuing to rise until the end of August. June and July had a healthy amount of sunshine which prompted early flowering and ripening although the dry conditions caused a few complications with millerandage and slightly lower yields in the Côte de Beaune. However, the grapes were able to reach full maturity allowing the retention of more whole bunches, giving the wines greater complexity.

The grapes were handpicked into 20 kilogram perforated boxes before being sorted for a second time in the winery. Following destemming the whole grapes were gravity fed into the fermentation tanks with maceration lasting around three weeks, with frequent cap treading. The wine was matured for 12 months in casks without racking, with 30% in new French oak, before being lightly filtered but not fined, prior to bottling by gravity.

Tasting Notes

This wine is intense ruby red in colour with purple tints. A beautiful bouquet combines floral notes of rose petals with fresh berries. This is an extremely elegant wine with refined silky tannins and a long delicate finish.
