Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vineyards

Rully is situated in the north of the Côte Chalonnaise. Chardonnay accounts for two thirds of the 300 hectares in production. In geological terms, Rully has more in common with the Côte de Beaune, sharing the oolithic limestone and marl which favours Chardonnay, as well as the ideal south-easterly exposure. However, like the Côte Chalonnaise, Rully is 50 metres higher than most of the Côte de Beaune, so that its grapes ripen somewhat later. The best parcels are located at an altitude of between 230-300 metres. The vines themselves are single-guyot trained and have an average age of 30 years. Yields were 45 hectolitres per hectare.

Vintage Information

Producers breathed a collective sigh of relief after picking a healthy harvest in 2008. Mildew, threat of botrytis and even hail meant that there were plenty of challenges in the vineyard early that year. In mid-September, a change in weather brought a north wind, with cool temperatures. The conditions dried the vines and helped increase sugar levels while keeping acidity levels high. The team began to pick on 22nd September with Chardonnay. Acidity was higher than usual with a superb concentration and balance combining to make this a great vintage.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-picked and sorted into small, perforated boxes, then pressed straight into cask for fermentation. 100% of the wine was fermented and matured in casks (25% new French oak) with no lees stirring to accentuate the mineral qualities of the wine. The maturation lasted 12 months, with a very light filtration before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Light gold in colour with green hints. The nose is characterised by floral and lemony notes. The palate shows yellow fruits and honey, with a relatively full body for the Côte Chalonnaise. Rich and smooth with subtle vanilla flavours on the long, fresh finish.
