Vosne-Romanée `Les Jacquines`

Côte de Nuits

Jean-Claude Boisset

Jean-Claude Boisset was radically transformed with the arrival in 2002 of viniculteur Grégory...

Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vosne-Romanée is located at the heart of the Côte de Nuits, between Vougeot and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The 'Les Jacquines' vineyard is located in the south of the village at the limit of Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation. The vines here are 50 years old with low yields due to de-budding. Green harvest is done if needed, as well as careful working of the soil using very limited amount of fertilizers and conducting environmentally friendly pest management. Although it is not certified, this vineyards is farmed entirely organically.

Vintage Information

2014 was a good vintage in Burgundy. The year started off well with a promisingly warm spring. This head-start was disrupted by a cold and rainy summer. Temperatures increased and maturation of the grapes began to gather pace at the end of August. A warm and dry September delivered an abundant harvest of perfectly ripe grapes.

Grapes were hand picked and sorted into perforated 20kg crates. The second sorting took place at the sorting table in the winery, after which the grapes were 100% destalked but not crushed, and put into vats using gravity. Total maceration lasted for 26 days including one week of cold maceration at 12°C. Fermentation took place with natural yeasts and infrequent pigeage. The wine was aged for 17 months on its lees without racking off, with 30% new barrels made from French wood. The wine was lightly filtered but not fined, then bottled using gravity.

Tasting Notes

Intensely coloured and tinged with ruby. Very expressive on the nose with aromas of blackcurrant and spices. The palate shows great attack, and is very long and pure on the finish.
