South Island Pinot Noir

Marlborough

Kim Crawford

Kim Crawford Wines was established in late 1996, when Kim launched a range...

made from fruit grown in the South Island. Kim sold the company to Constellation in 2005 and has since handed the winemaking reins over to the Constellation winemaking team. Despite Kim no longer being involved with these wines, the current winemakers continue the classic Kim Crawford philosophy and style. Control over grape supply has always been essential for Kim Crawford Wines and they now have the largest vineyard resource in Marlborough of any wine company, across the greatest breadth of sub-regions, ensuring consistent quality and style. For that consistency, and success over the past 20 years, Wine Enthusiast magazine USA recognised Kim Crawford as their “New World Winery of the Year 2016”.

Vineyards

These grapes are from the cool climate vineyards in the Marlborough region including Deliverance, Castle Cliffs and Valleyfield. A wide variety of clones and rootstock were used, along with a mixture of soils and microclimates to ensure a balance of flavour profiles and good quality.

Vintage Information

Pre-Christmas the weather in Marlborough was fine with plenty of sunshine resulting in good fruit set. Rain in late February followed by warm weather caused some concern, but this turned out to be the only rain of the season until after harvest. The good weather leading up to harvest meant that the fruit could be picked block by block in perfect condition.

Vinification

The grapes were predominantly machine harvested with a proportion being hand-picked. After de-stemming and 5 days of cold-maceration, they were warmed and inoculated with selected yeasts. The must was hand-plunged and warm fermented to dryness. At this point, the grapes were pressed and all went though malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in a mixture of tank and older barrels for just over 9 months.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby red in colour. An enticingly aromatic wine showing notes of red berry fruits and dark cherries with the alluring complexity of well integrated oak. Vibrant, fresh fruit flavours of strawberry and cherry are underpinned by nuances of sweet, smoky oak. Good firm tannins give the wine length and weight.
