purchased property in Barrancas (southern Maipú) and planted vines in rocky, well-drained plots situated along the Mendoza river. It was Sami’s son Isaac who first began to make fine wine at the estate, including Caballero de la Cepa, one of the first high-quality wines that garnered international awareness for premium Argentinian wines. Sogrape Vinhos purchased Finca Flichman in 1998, and invested heavily in restoring the vineyards and equipping the winery with modern equipment. The original Barrancas vineyard remains among their 400 hectares of vines, which also includes the higher altitude Tupungato vineyard. Today the wines are made by Germán Berra, one of Argentina’s brightest talents, who was recognised as the ‘Best Young Winemaker’ in the Argentina Wine Awards in 2016. Germán works closely with consultant and renowned winemaker Alberto Antonini.
The fruit for this wine is sourced from Barrancas, a small wine producing area in the region of Maipú in Mendoza. The soils here are deep and alluvial. The altitude of the vineyards in this area are approximately 750 metres above sea level, which is lower than the vineyards in the Uco Valley region of Mendoza. Renowned viticultural consultant Pedro Parra of Clos des Fous helped with site selection. Situated at the foot of the Andes, the vineyards benefit from large diurnal temperature variations which result in longer ripening seasons and more elegant wines.
Winter 2014 was shorter than average. There were not enough snow storms in the mountains, which resulted in a significant decline in the amount of water available from the mountain rivers. The beginning of spring brought with it a few late frosts, which affected some regions and vineyards in the Uco Valley. This meant lower production per hectare and consequently more concentrated grapes. February started with some summer rainfalls but was followed by a dry March and April. In general, harvest was shorter compared to previous vintages and gave wines with lovely natural acidity and well structured tannins.
All grapes were hand-harvested. They then spent 15-20 days fermenting at a maximum temperature of 28°C. The wine was then aged for 12 months in oak, half of which was American, while the other half was French, followed by eight months in bottle.
This wine is a deep ruby red colour, with violet tints. On the nose, it displays aromas of red forest fruits, oak spice and chocolate. On the palate, the wine bursts with flavours of fruit and herbs, along with oak spice again. The finish is long, rounded and elegant.
