Vineyards

Planted at 570 metres, at the highest point of the Clare Valley, the vineyard is an elongated triangular wedge of emerald green that sits above the rolling golden cornfields of the Clare Valley.

Vintage Information

The Clare Valley experienced a fantastic start to the season, with winter rain continuing through to spring providing good moisture levels. The season started early and ran smoothly in all respects. Weather conditions were ideal, with consistently warm days and mild evenings. High temperatures in November meant early budburst, which lead to an early finish for vintage - the earliest in 30 years. The fruit looked and tasted as good, or better, than anything we have seen in the last three years. Cabernet produced from this vintage shows superior finesse and balance.

Vinification

The grapes were hand picked, crushed and de-stemmed, then fermented for eight days in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Gentle plunging of the cap took place to aid extraction of colour and tannin. The wine then passed into French oak barriques (45% new oak) and aged for 18 months. It was bottled without fining or filtering and aged for a further year in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Wonderfully fragrant and brooding, with spicy, wild herb overtones and a hint of schisty minerality. The palate is reserved and restrained with some primal mulberry and blackcurrant flavours made complex by savoury minerality. It is dense and opulent, less fruity than most Australian Cabernet blends, powerful and chewy, tightly structured and finishes with fine, grainy tannins and shaley minerally notes. Expect it to become more approachable over the next five years and drinking beautifully from ten years of age.
