Vineyards

The Alea Riesling comes from a narrow corridor of hard red rock with poor, orangey, red loam topsoil in the Grosset Rockwood Vineyard at Watervale. As the early fruit from the vineyard reminded Jeff of the great German Rieslings, he decided to take a very different approach to the creation of Alea. The aim was to make a wine generous, succulent and long. While the Grosset Springvale vineyard is a soft rock site of red loam over limestone, 'Alea' is a hard rock site and the wines are distinctly different.

Vintage Information

Vibrant, flavoursome and unblemished fruit from healthy vines made a promising start to what turned out to be the most exciting vintage in a decade. A warmer than average December was followed by normal temperatures, but a dry January. February began cool, with some much-needed rain before a string of warm, sunny days and cool nights, making for ideal harvest conditions.

Vinification

Grapes were hand harvested and delivered promptly to the winery in small parcels, where they were crushed and destemmed. The fruit was chilled and then gently pressed and settled in tank for five days at 0°C. Only the free run juice was used. Fermentation was carried out at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to preserve clean, pristine varietal characters. The final wine was blended over a number of weeks before bottling in July 2016.

Tasting Notes

Bright, bold aromas of white flowers and kaffir lime and a generous, almost fleshy mid-palate with distinct lemongrass and lime flavours. Almost dry, the palate is succulent and long with a tight, fine structure and exuberant sweeping acidity on the clean finish.
