Jeffrey Grosset established his winery in 1981 in the historic township of Auburn,...
Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The winery is stylish and functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned vineyards and winemaking. Jeff is best known for his iconic Rieslings - Polish Hill and Springvale - and he has almost single-handedly been responsible for the renaissance of Clare Valley Riesling. By combining a disciplined approach and decades of experience, Grosset consistently achieves the purest expression of variety and place.
Jeff's fascination with the ancient art of distillation has led to the creation of a unique spirit made from organically grown Riesling from his Springvale vineyard. This lies in the Watervale sub-region at 460 metres above sea level. A 'soft rock' site, it has thin topsoils of red loams interspersed with shale over limestone.
The juice from grapes grown specifically for Grosset45 was fermented dry and then transferred as young wine to a copper pot still. The wine was then heated to extract the perfume and alcohol content of the wine by capturing the vapours and allowing them to condense. The wine was distilled only once, so the spirit retains the subtle perfume and character of the wine. No botanicals were used and no flavour or colour was added, so the result is a unique spirit that is 100% pure.
Grosset45 is a pure, fragrant, very fine, slightly opalescent eau-de-vie like spirit. The nose has fresh green apples with a light and smooth mouth feel. It is clean and ethereal with notes of pear and hay. Almost dry, it is underpinned by a linear acidity and is fragrant, generous, succulent and long.
