Vineyards

Grapes for the Tinto are selected both from estate-owned vineyards located in Pedrogão within the Vidígueira commune, and from growers whose vineyards are carefully managed by Herdade do Peso’s viticulturalist. The climate in Alentejo is warm and sunny, with little rainfall. The soils of the estate-owned vineyards are mainly limestone. After ripening assessments, the different grape varieties were harvested separately at their optimum point of aromatic and acidic ripeness.

Vintage Information

The 2015 growing year started with a lot of rain, evolving into a dry and cold winter. Spring was drier than in previous years, with some occasional rain helping the healthy development of the vine. Summer was marked by hot, dry weather. The typical cool nights of the Vidígueira region were slow to arrive, which meant a more thorough job of selecting the fruit was required to avoid overripe fruit at harvest. This resulted in wines with freshness and balance.

Vinification

The grapes were carefully monitored, picked at optimum phenolic ripeness, and transported to the winery. After total destemming and gentle crushing, the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25ºC for about eight days, to maximise fruit flavours and create an easy-drinking red wine. After malolactic fermentation, the wine spent about six months in stainless steel tanks and was then blended, fined, cold stabilised and filtered as required prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes

This wine is bright red in colour. It has aromas of cherry and plum, and fruity flavours, along with smooth tannins, good acidity and a very long finish.
