This 160-hectare property has been owned by the Guedes family since 1996. ...
It is situated in the southern part of the Alentejo, on the limestone soils of Vidígueira. As this is the warmest part of the region, it has 152 hectares of red varieties (Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, Periquita, Moreto and Touriga Nacional) and only eight hectares of white grapes (Antão Vaz and Arinto). Winemaker Luís Cabral de Almeida makes fruit-expressive wines that reflect the warmer climate of Vidígueira.
Herdade do Peso’s sustainably-farmed vineyard is located in Pedrogão within the Vidígueira commune, where the climate is warm and sunny with little rainfall. The property includes a dam, which occupies 20 hectares and provides much-needed water to irrigate the vineyard. The soils here are mainly limestone. After ripening assessments, the grapes were harvested separately at their optimum point of aromatic and acidic ripeness.
2014 was an excellent year in the Alentejo, and in the Vidigueira sub-region in particular. There was practically no rain during the ripening period, but daily temperatures only exceeded 35ºC a few times. Typical of this area, the nights were always cool – generally between 15ºC and 17ºC. These conditions enabled the grapes to reach excellent ripeness while retaining fresh acidity.
The grapes were subject to soft crushing and cold soaking at 10ºC for three days. This was followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC for around nine days. This was followed by the separation of the finest free run juice and the soft pressing of the must. After malolactic fermentation, the wines of each grape variety were transferred separately into new (40%) and one-year-old (60%) high-quality French oak barrels where they matured for around 12 months. The final blend was decided after numerous tastings to ensure that only the best barrels were selected. The wine was subsequently kept at a controlled temperature of 15ºC for six months.
The Reserva has a very deep garnet-red colour. The nose has excellent intensity and aromatic complexity with a core of well-ripened plums, raspberries and blackberries enriched by spicy pepper, menthol and tobacco notes. Full-bodied on the palate with firm, ripe tannins, balanced acidity and an intense, long and complex finish.
