One of the world's great winemakers, John Duval was given the 'Grange' torch...

by Max Schubert and passed it on to his successor when he left Penfolds to start out on his own with the 2003 vintage, sourcing fruit from some long-time friends in the Barossa. His red wines - a Shiraz and a Shiraz/Grenache/Mourvedre blend - are sourced from old Barossa vines aged between 50 and 100 years old and showcase the best of the Barossa region. In 2010 he introduced a white Plexus wine to his range using traditional white Rhône varietals.

Vineyards

Shiraz fruit was sourced from some of the oldest vineyards in the Krondorf, Tanunda, Light Pass and Eden Valley regions of the north and east Barossa.

Vintage Information

2014 saw a fiery start to the vintage, with one of the warmest summers since 1908. Fortunately, mid-February brought 90 millimetres of rain which refreshed all the vines and brought all of the fruit back into superb balance. The next eight weeks saw the most temperate, sublime autumn harvest weather seen for many years.

Vinification

Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques were employed with Entity. Fermentation was with submerged cap in small stainless steel fermenters. The wine underwent 100% barrel maturation for 15 months, with a third in new fine grain French oak and the balance in two, three and four year old French oak hogsheads (300 litres).

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby with a purple glint. Attractive blackberry and plum aromatics, complemented with some savoury spice. On the palate, the Entity is full bodied and generous, with layers of dark berry fruit and youthful balanced tannins. Very pure and mouth filling, with ample structure and great ageing potential.
