Fred Loimer owns 80 hectares around Langenlois, in the sunny Kamptal region of...
Lower Austria. Fred makes a range of wines from the excellent value 'Lois' and 'Lenz' to the superb, single varietal Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners. Unlike many Austrian producers who go for an overly rich and sweet style, Fred gets full ripeness in the vineyard yet ferments to dryness, managing to produce wines with lovely definition, zest and balance on the palate.
The Pinot Noir comes from vineyards located in the town of Gumpoldskirchen, just south of Vienna. Here where Alpine influences meet the Pannonian climate, powerful wines with depth, character and a long life are produced. The vines grow on chalky soils and are Guyot trained. The vines have an average age of between seven and 10 years, are planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and yield 25 hectolitres per hectare. Loimer adheres to organic and biodynamic principles and the resultant wine is certified both organic and biodynamic.
The 2013 vintage didn't start off particularly well with a prolonged winter. This delayed budburst, which eventually happened following some welcome sunshine at the end of April. Hail in May meant that yields were decreased in Loimer's Käferberg and Steinmassl vineyards. The weather in June was changeable, with a heatwave followed by cold and damp conditions at the end of the month. Summer 2013 was one of the five hottest summers in the last century. An extremely dry period in July was counteracted by rain in August, just in time for the ripening period to begin. Ripening was a slow process, so calmness and patience were important until the Pinot Noir was ready to be harvested over three weeks during mid-September.
The Pinot Noir was hand-harvested into 20 kg crates. After crushing, maceration lasted for three weeks and fermentation took place in large oak vats, using indigenous yeasts only. The wine aged in 300 litre used oak casks until it was bottled in July 2015.
The 'Gumpoldskirchen' has a flavour profile as intriguing as its name, The nose opens with expressive aromas of bright red berries, purple flowers and hints of cinnamon. The palate is savoury and complex with soft and well-integrated tannins. This wine has potential to age a few years in bottle but is drinking deliciously right now.
