Cuatro Pasos
As well as their work in pioneering the whites of Galicia, Luciano Amoedo...
and Katia Álvarez of Martín Códax also make this red wine in Bierzo. The Bierzo DO lies further inland from Rías Baixas, with a slightly warmer climate where Mencía is the native variety.
Vineyards
The discovery of four bear footprints in a magnificent vineyard in the highest areas of the Bierzo inspired the name of this wine - Cuatro Pasos or Four Steps. It is a 100% MencĂa from grapes chosen from the over 80-year-old vines from vineyards located in the high areas of the Bierzo region.
Vinification
Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats with temperature control. After vinification, the wine was aged in oak barrels for approximately 3 -4 months in several different types of French and American oak
Tasting Notes
The 2009 is bright red in colour, with intense cherry and spice on the notes. Red and black berries abound on the palate, with a touch of minerality too. Tannins are ripe and full although remain in the background; it is the juicy fruit flavour that lasts well on the finish, supported by refreshing acidity and mellow spice complexity.
