birthplace of Marina's father Fausto, one of the greatest cyclists of the 20th century. The family has taken the traditional heritage of the area and applied a modern approach in the winery to produce wines of excellent quality. The estate has concentrated on the native varieties of Timorasso, Favorita, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Croatina and works on a small scale with four hectares of vineyard to ensure the quality of the vines shows through. Parents Marina and Giovanni work closely with son Francesco and his wife Anna, using sustainable methods in the vineyard and employing great expertise in the winery.
The vineyard is situated 400 metres above sea level, occupying a sheltered position protected from the cold northerly winds thus creating a microclimate for growing perfectly matured fruit. There is marked diurnal temperature variation, which enhances the grapes natural qualities and fruit purity. The soil is made up of 30% sand, 55% clay and 15% limestone and is grey/light blue in colour.
The 2012 vintage was cooler than 2011. Spring rains continued into early summer. The month of August was marked by lower than average temperatures, which slowed growth temporarily. September started humid, which increased the threat of disease. However, in late September the conditions became dry and windy reducing disease incidence and helping fruit to reach optimal maturity.
Grapes were hand harvested in 18 kg boxes. Once in the winery, the grapes were shortly macerated on the skins followed by a period of cold settling. Fermentation takes place at 16-18° C. After fermentation, the wine was moved to tonneaux where it spent 12 months in contact with the lees to increase complexity and depth of the wine.
On the nose it shows intense and delicate aromas of melon, apples and hints of flowers. The palate is full and lively, with notes of nectarines, yellow apples, flowers and citrus fruit. The wine lingers on the palate with a refreshing acidity.
