Crozes-Hermitage Rouge

Northern Rhône

Maison Les Alexandrins

Maison Les Alexandrins is the newly renamed collaboration between Nicolas Jaboulet, formerly of...

the eponymous winery in Tain, winemaker Guillaume Sorrel and viticulturalist Alexandre Caso. Each person brings their expertise to this micro-négociant, an extension of Domaine Les Alexandrins, established in 2015. The aim of Maison Les Alexandrins remains the same: to buy parcels of fruit from some of the top growers in each appellation in the Northern Rhône. Maison and Domaine Les Alexandrins will soon be a permanent fixture in the Northern Rhône with a new winery under construction in Tain-l’Hermitage.

Vineyards

Crozes-Hermitage is the biggest of the Northern Rhône appellations, measuring 1,300 hecatares. The grapes for this Crozes-Hermitage Rouge are sourced from both the northern and southern parts of the appellation. In the northern part, the soil is composed of granite slopes similar to those of Hermitage. In the south, the soil is mainly alluvial with a few stony terraces brought by the Rhône river.

Vintage Information

2016 has been hailed as a great vintage but it wasn’t without its challenges. The growing season did not get off to a great start. Spring was marked by cloudy and wet weather. Hail storms also posed a threat with some loss of yield but luckily it was early enough in the season for vines to recover vegetative growth. As a result of this weather, flowering and budburst were delayed. The summer months were very hot and dry but sorely needed rain fell at the beginning of September. Fortunately, good weather then resumed until harvest, which resulted in fruit of good quality and moderate alcohol levels.

Vinification

The grapes underwent a period of cold-maceration in order to extract the delicate aromatics from the fruit. Maceration and fermentation lasted for 20 days, with gentle punch downs and pumping over of the cap to extract silky tannins. The wine was then aged in large, 55-80 hectolitre wooden vats for 10 months, allowing the tannins to soften while maintaining freshness.

Tasting Notes

This wine is bright ruby red in colour, with purple hues. Aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberries combine with a hint of smokiness. The intensity of flavour and well-integrated tannins provide concentration, yet smoothness on the palate.
