`Hebo` Toscana IGT

Val di Cornia

Petra

This 300 hectare estate, created by the Moretti family of Bellavista fame, is...

situated in Suvereto in the Val di Cornia. When Vittorio Moretti, together with his daughter Francesca, set out in search of a property in the Maremma in 1997, they asked Attilio Scienza, Italy's most celebrated viticultural professor and consultant, to help them find the best spot. Scienza came up with Petra (the name is derived from the Latin for stone, or 'pietra' in Italian'), which is southeast of Bolgheri and inland from the sea. The estate now has 97 hectares of vineyard, which surround a splendid modernist winery built by the Swiss architect, Mario Botta. Consultant winemaker Beppe Caviola works closely with Francesca Moretti, CEO, to ensure that the quality of fruit arriving in the winery is being captured in the finished wines.

Vineyards

The name Ebo was the name of an ancient Etruscan settlement in Suvereto. The wine is produced from a blend of grapes, the Sangiovese retaining its typical character, reflecting the rich soil in which it is grown in the Val di Cornia.

Vintage Information

A rainy, mild winter was followed by a cool spring, with one exceptional patch of high temperatures causing early budbreak and quick and generous fruit set. But the growing cycle was protracted due to cool weather and frequent hailstorms in July and August, causing widespread downy mildew. An exceptionally mild and dry September and early October turned a potentially disastrous vintage into a surprisingly good one, but with generally much lighter, earlier-ripening wines than 2013.

Vinification

The grapes were transported to the winery in plastic crates of up to 17kg. Natural yeasts were used for fermentation. Vinification took place in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures. Matured in Slavonian oak casks, the wine then spent approximately 10 months in second or third passage French oak barriques. The wine then spent a further 10 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby red in colour. The bouquet is full of red fruit, with hints of black cherry and blueberry. The wine has excellent balance and length with a tangy finish of blackberry and dried fruit.
