F.X. Pichler is located in Wachau, a region so remarkably beautiful it has...
earned a spot on Unesco’s World Heritage list. The Pichler family have been farmers in the region for five generations. Franz Xaver (F.X.) built a winery in 1971, and his son Lucas makes the wines today. Lucas’ grandfather began with three hectares of land, which have now grown to 22 hectares because Lucas finds it hard to say no when rare vineyard plots are made available for sale. 70% of their wines are classed as Smaragd, the highest quality level in the standards set by a select group of producers, the Vinea Wachau, while 30% are classed as Federspie, the middle level. The climate in the Wachau is influenced by several sources; the moderating Danube River; cold air from the forests in Waldviertel and Dunkelsteiner; and warm air from the Pannonian basin.
There is an international consensus that this is the absolute model vineyard. This vertiginous, barren and purist primitive-rock terrace, which is south-easterly exposed and located at the exit of a side valley, creates a very special microclimate. The Kellerberg vineyard benefits from the sun early in the morning. During the night, cool air streaming in from the bordering woods fosters the development of the complex texture and delicately exotic aromas and flavours of this wine. In autumn, large temperature differences between day and night shape the grapes. Honey melon, mango, passion fruit, banana and fully ripe peach, concise minerally notes as a dowry of the meager, weathered soil, and the extremely deeply rooting old vines make the wines of this site unparalleled and outstanding.
This vintage has been officially described by critics as ‘outstanding quality, characterised by particularly delicate fruit-driven aromatics and fresh acidity.’ Then a wet summer gave rise to plentiful mildew, although conditions in early autumn were much more favourable and the resultant wines are thought to be of good quality, destined for early drinking.
The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine was stored in large old Austrian oak barrels with capacities of 3,000 - 5,000 litres. The wine was aged on fine lees for six months before being bottled in August.
The Kellerberg Riesling Smaragd 2016 offers exotic aromas of mango, passion fruit and honey that funnel seamlessly into a steely and crisp palate.
