The Quinta dos Carvalhais is a beautiful property in Mangualde commune with vineyards...
dedicated to noble regional grape varieties. The estate combines extensive experience of traditional winemaking practices with the most up-to-date techniques, creating wines of great elegance and a unique personality. It has also been instrumental in defending the interests and living conditions of many small winegrowers who deliver their grapes there. Quinta dos Carvalhais exclusively uses its own grapes to produce exceptional wines that honour the Dão tradition and reputation.
The vineyards are planted on poor granite soils with indigenous Dão varieties. Today, winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida makes an increasingly impressive range of wines from estate vineyards, which are situated at an altitude of 465-500 metres above sea level.
The cold, dry weather and lack of water in the soil, in the early months of the year delayed budburst. Flowering at Quinta dos Carvalhais was two weeks later than the previous year. Despite the April rains, which demanded careful attention in the vineyards to prevent onset of disease, the grapes got off to a good start. There was a certain amount of rain again in August, which delayed progress and made for uneven ripening, but the dry east wind and cool nights resulted in good, balanced grapes and wines of very good quality.
The grapes for this wine were picked plot by plot and rigorously selected for quality before being vinified separately. The grapes were unloaded from 20kg crates directly into the destemmer-crusher, from which they dropped by gravity into small stainless steel tanks with automatic pumping over and temperature control. The alcoholic fermentation took about eight days at an average temperature of around 28°C. The Touriga Nacional from one particular plot remained on its skins post-fermentation for a further 20 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, followed by 12 months of ageing in new and used fine-pored French oak barrels, sourced from eight different coopers, before it was fined, filtered and bottled.
Ruby-red in colour with intense aromas of ripe red and black fruits, with floral and herbal notes that give the wine freshness, and subtle oaky flavours from time spent ageing in barrel. Elegant and balanced, with smooth tannins providing structure, the aromatic quality persists through to a long finish.
