The 105 hectare Quinta dos Carvalhais is a beautiful property in Mangualde commune...
in the Dão. Purchased and invested in by the Guedes family, the estate combines the most up-to-date techniques with extensive experience of traditional winemaking practices, creating wines with elegance and personality. In addition to investing in their own vineyards, Quinta dos Carvalhais has also been instrumental in defending the interests and living conditions of many local small winegrowers who sell their grapes.
This 105 hectare property, which today has 50 hectares under vine, was purchased by the Guedes family in 1988. The vineyards were planted on poor granite soils with indigenous Dão varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Pinheira for reds and Encruzado, Assario, Verdelho, Bical and Cerceal for whites), and the modern winery was built soon afterwards. Today, winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida makes an impressive range of wines from estate vineyards, which are situated at an altitude of 465-500 metres above sea level.
2012 was a good year in the Dão. Although there was a delay to the vegetative cycle, caused by cold and dry weather at the beginning of the year, and some diversity in maturation resulting from rainfall at the start of August, the easterly winds and cold nights typical of the region restored balance to the maturation process. The resulting wines have balanced alcohol levels, acidity and structure.
The grapes were harvested by variety and their plot of origin. They were subject to a rigorous selection process and vinified separately in small quantities. 20kg batches of grapes were destemmed and crushed. The resulting juice was drained by gravity-flow into small stainless steel fermentation tanks - equipped with automatic temperature control and automated pumping over systems - where alcoholic fermentation took place for roughly eight days at an average temperature of 28ºC. The Touriga Nacional grapes underwent further post-fermentation maceration. After fermentation, the wine was transferred into stainless steel vats for malolactic fermentation before maturing in new (14%) and used (86%) oak barrels for 12 months. Only fine grain French casks from French coopers were used.
Quinta dos Carvalhais Tinto Reserva is deep red in colour, with aromas of black fruit and spices lifted by hints of menthol. It is firm and powerful in the mouth with structured, ripe tannins and good acidity.
