The Ribbonwood wines are made by Andrew Hedley, an Englishman from Gateshead with...
a PhD in Applied Chemistry. Andrew moved to New Zealand in 1993; five years later, he began pursuing his passion for winemaking. The name of this range comes from the Ribbonwood trees, New Zealand's tallest native deciduous species, which grows around the vineyard in Renwick. Sensitive to the environmental responsibility they have for their surroundings, Andrew and his team have also planted more than 1,000 native shrubs and trees to enhance the biodiversity of the vineyard and improve their wastewater management systems. They also use light-weight bottles and recycled cartons to reduce their carbon footprint.
The fruit used to make the Ribbonwood 2016 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from a selection of five Wairau Valley (90%) and one Waihopai Valley (10%) vineyards. The Sauvignon Blanc vines in their original Ribbonwood Block, located near Renwick, are planted in an unusual east-west direction, which allows for shading on the south side of the rows. This enhances the gooseberry aromatics in the fruit.
Settled conditions during December allowed a generous crop to set. Extremely low rainfall during the early summer put pressure on water supplies, but rain in early January broke the drought and vineyards flourished as temperatures started to climb above average in the New Year. Harvest started in mid-March, interrupted by some showers towards the end of the month. Temperatures remained well above average and Marlborough’s classic Indian summer made a welcome appearance allowing vineyards to achieve full ripeness.
This wine is produced in a modern Marlborough style. In the cellar, they have dozens of small lots being fermented in individual tanks of varying sizes. This allows plenty of room to handle a multitude of picking times, yeast strains and temperatures, resulting in optimal blending options.
An engaging nose, with a hint of ripe citrus notes underlying a fresh herbal bouquet. On the palate, ripe gooseberry and herbal flavours complement classical capsicum and stony mineral tones. Supple and satisfying, the wine is balanced by a fine acid backbone.
