Now owned by Crimson Wine Group, who own Pine Ridge, Seghesio remains focused...
on its family roots with Ted Seghesio making better wines than ever before. The astonishing concentration of flavours that Seghesio achieve in their wines can be attributed to the age of the vineyards, some of which were established as far back as 1895. Italian consultant Alberto Antonini has assisted in improving the quality of their Sangiovese (which is sourced from the oldest vineyards of the variety in California) and his influence can also be seen in the ripe, juicy, approachable style of Zinfandel that has become Seghesio's hallmark. Displaying freshness, purity of fruit, balance and elegance that can be difficult to achieve with the variety, the Seghesio Zinfandels have scooped trophies and Gold medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards and International Wine Challenge for a number of recent years. Although best known for their reds, Seghesio also produces a delicious Arneis, another traditional Italian variety, which is sealed under stelvin to retain its superb aromatic character.
The estate vineyard in Alexander Valley was planted in 1895 alongside the family home. The Seghesio viticultural team walk this venerable vineyard with willow switches tipping the canes to drive lateral growth into the vine's crown providing shade when the canes droop late in the season. Both a green harvest and a veraison thin are performed.
Overall, 2009 was a nearly ideal growing season with gradual ripening due to cooler temperatures with daily minimums below the 30-year average. Tannins and flavours developed gradually without the usual heat spikes, but a warm September puncuated the vintage by bringing the fruit to full ripeness. Harvest took place by hand between 23rd September and 2nd October.
100% small lot fermentation with daily punch-downs by hand to gently extract colour and tannin. A 10 day maceration followed fermentation before the wine was racked to barrel and aged for 11 months in 75% French, 25% American oak of which 25% was new.
Opaque purple in colour. On the nose aromas of blackberry, raspberry and other brambly fruit characterisitcs mingle with notes of sweet spice and vanilla. On the palate this wine is full-bodied and rich, with soft, ripe tannins, good acidity and plently of dark berry fruit character which lingers on the spicy, complex finish.
