Now owned by Crimson Wine Group, who own Pine Ridge, Seghesio remains focused...
on its family roots with Ted Seghesio making better wines than ever before. The astonishing concentration of flavours that Seghesio achieve in their wines can be attributed to the age of the vineyards, some of which were established as far back as 1895. Italian consultant Alberto Antonini has assisted in improving the quality of their Sangiovese (which is sourced from the oldest vineyards of the variety in California) and his influence can also be seen in the ripe, juicy, approachable style of Zinfandel that has become Seghesio's hallmark. Displaying freshness, purity of fruit, balance and elegance that can be difficult to achieve with the variety, the Seghesio Zinfandels have scooped trophies and Gold medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards and International Wine Challenge for a number of recent years. Although best known for their reds, Seghesio also produces a delicious Arneis, another traditional Italian variety, which is sealed under stelvin to retain its superb aromatic character.
The estate vineyard in Alexander Valley was planted in 1895 alongside the family home. The Seghesio viticultural team work the vineyard with willow switches tipping the canes to drive growth into the vine's crown, providing shade when the canes droop late in the season. Both a green harvest and a veraison thin are performed.
An easy season for growers in California with plenty of sunshine. No heat waves or heavy rain and a phenomenally large crop without compromised quality. Described by the winery as a 'Goldilocks year', it was not too hot, not too cold and had just the right amount of sun and fog. Fruit was hand-picked between the 10th of September and 23rd of October.
100% small lot fermentation with daily punch-downs by hand to gently extract colour and tannins. An 8-12 day maceration followed fermentation before the wine was racked to barrel and aged for 14 months in 25% new French oak barrels.
Blackberry, raspberry and other brambly fruit characteristic of the Alexander Valley with subtle hints of oak, fresh acidity and soft, ripe fruit tannins. A signature bread crust undertone of the Home Ranch lingers on the finish.
