Now owned by Crimson Wine Group, who own Pine Ridge, Seghesio remains focused...
on its family roots with Ted Seghesio making better wines than ever before. The astonishing concentration of flavours that Seghesio achieve in their wines can be attributed to the age of the vineyards, some of which were established as far back as 1895. Italian consultant Alberto Antonini has assisted in improving the quality of their Sangiovese (which is sourced from the oldest vineyards of the variety in California) and his influence can also be seen in the ripe, juicy, approachable style of Zinfandel that has become Seghesio's hallmark. Displaying freshness, purity of fruit, balance and elegance that can be difficult to achieve with the variety, the Seghesio Zinfandels have scooped trophies and Gold medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards and International Wine Challenge for a number of recent years. Although best known for their reds, Seghesio also produces a delicious Arneis, another traditional Italian variety, which is sealed under stelvin to retain its superb aromatic character.
Arneis originates from the Piemonte region of Italy. This rare grape's literal translation is "little rascal" due to its erratic ripening tendencies and temperamental nature during fermentation. For some time, Seghesio had the largest planting of Arneis in the United States - all of 26 vines. Today, they have 5,000 vines (3.2 hectares) planted on their Keyhole Ranch vineyard. The vineyards are in the Keyhole Ranch in the Russian River Valley, where cool but dry conditions prevail and produce highly expressive Arneis. Warm-to-hot days with cool, fog-influenced nights help this variety retain acidity and delicate fruit aromas and flavours.
2012 brought a long and moderate growing season without any major weather incidents, on the heels of two very cool vintages. The grapes were harvested by hand on the 1st of October 2012.
The grapes were whole cluster pressed then fermented in 100% stainless steel in order to retain the crisp acidity and bright Arneis varietal fruit aromas.
Pale gold in colour. Mineral and dusty nuances are enhanced with crisp and floral aromas. Complex and full-bodied, the palate has notes of pear and dried apricot. A crisp acidity elevates the wine's fruit profile and leaves a fresh finish.
