who also head winemaker for Casa Ferreirinha and Sandeman. His aim is to produce bright, lively wines for youthful drinking using native Douro varieties. Vila Regia wines are made from grapes grown in a selection of vineyards located primarily at altitude in the upper reaches of the Douro.

Vineyards

Selected grapes originate in the highlands of the Douro region. In these elevated areas, the soil in the Duoro Valley is made up of schist - a slate-like metamorphic rock that is rich in nutrients and has useful water retention properties.

Vintage Information

The 2014 season was characterised by atypical weather. It was a particularly rainy year, with a cool summer, though there were heat waves recorded at the start of summer and the beginning of autumn. January was exceptionally hot, but August was cooler than average. The harvested grapes had very well-balanced levels of sugar, acidity and phenolic compounds. The harvest took place at the start of September, and some rainfall was recorded in the middle of the month which made careful grape selection necessary.

Vinification

The selected Douro grapes were soft-crushed, destemmed and transferred to stainless steel tanks where they underwent skin maceration and alcoholic fermentation. During this phase, gentle maceration took place using 'pumping over'. Temperatures were controlled to below 25ÂșC to preserve fresh aromatics. After fermentation, the wine was kept in stainless steel tanks throughout winter at the winery. Due to the low temperatures during this period, thicker particles formed a deposit. At the end of winter, the first racking took place separating the wine from this sediment. The wine was bottled after careful clarification and cold stabilisation.

Tasting Notes

Ruby red in colour with fresh red strawberry and raspberry aromas, as well as some black fruits and a hint of black pepper. On the palate, this is a full-bodied wine with well-integrated acidity and lingering flavours of ripe red fruits on the harmonious finish.
