Liberty Wines Independent Off-Trade Wine Report 2024

Liberty Wines

We are delighted to share Liberty Wines’ first Independent Off-Trade Wine Report.

We believe the strength of the independent retail sector lies in its diversity, specialisation and flexibility. However, these strengths make tracking the indie market difficult, which is reflected in the current lack of data on the sector. We were determined to fill this gap and provide our customers with an accurate and actionable view of indie performance. We have achieved this by working with HDI (Hospitality Data Insights) to track bank card spend in over 100 of the UK’s leading indies.

The data reveals how spending habits and consumer behaviour have changed from pre-COVID-19 to today. Unsurprisingly, the report shows that the last couple of years have been challenging for indies. Sales have been static, which, given rising prices, means indies are selling less wine by volume. However, the wider trends since 2019 are positive: sales across our sample of indies are up +25%, far outperforming supermarkets and the on-trade. The quality of wine sold is higher and 10% more people are shopping at indies. These new consumers are younger, with potential to spend more in future. These factors give us confidence in the long-term outlook for the sector.
