Domaine Corsin have made outstanding wines in Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé since 1864 and were among the first to label wines as Pouilly-Fuissé and Mâcon Blanc. Today, Domaine Corsin is run by Jéremy, the sixth generation of the Corsin family, and comprises 13.6 hectares of Chardonnay, of which nine are in Saint-Véran.

The domaine’s Mâcon-Villages is sourced from fruit grown on north-east facing slopes at an elevation of 200 – 280 metres, in the villages of Davayé and Solutré. This unoaked Mâcon is bright gold, with refreshing citrus fruit on the palate and a long finish. The Saint-Véran ‘Tirage Précoce’ (which means ‘early racking’) is matured on its fine lees until bottling. The resulting wine has distinct citrus aromatics and a refreshing acidity. The Saint-Véran ‘Vieilles Vignes’ is sourced from vines with an average age of 40 years old. Fermented in stainless steel, 35% of the wine is aged on its fine lees, in oak barrels for eight months with occasional bâtonnage. The final wine is defined by citrus and yellow peach flavours, lifted by a bright acidity.

The Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ is sourced from 55-year-old vines in both Fuissé and Solutré, at the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. 40% of the wine is aged on its fine lees for 10 months, in oak barrels (20% new) with occasional bâtonnage. The Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru ‘Aux Chailloux’, is a single-parcel site that was awarded Premier Cru status in 2020. Fermented 50% in oak and 50% in stainless steel, the resulting wine has flavours of ripe yellow fruits, sweet pastries and hints of marzipan which linger on the finish.

Vineyards

The fruit for this wine come from vineyards around the villages of Davayé and Solutré, with a north-easterly exposure and an altitude between 200 and 280 metres. The Chardonnay vines are rooted in clay-limestone soils. The Mâcon-Villages plot “Les Prés Cousins”, is one of the oldest vineyards in Davayé, with an average vine age of 30 years.

Vintage

The 2022 vintage started with a long cold winter, leading to relatively late bud burst. Spring frosts presented dangers to the underdeveloped buds requiring careful management to avoid damage. A hot, windy summer followed and, with little rain, yields were down and the berries were smaller than usual, producing concentrated and rich wines.

Vinification

The grapes were harvested by hand before being gently pressed in a pneumatic press. This was followed by a cold fermentation in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. The wine was then aged on its fine lees in stainless steel tanks for six months prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes & Technical Details

This Chardonnay is light-gold in colour with green reflections. It is fruity and expressive on the nose with bright citrus aromas. On the palate, the wine is well-balanced with ripe flavours of peach and apricot that carry through onto the long finish.
